Armoured tank
The armoured tank is shaped like a tortoise with a conical shell and a central turret. It is armed with cannons around its entire circular perimeter. The project is illustrated by Leonardo in two phases. On the right of the drawing, the armoured tank is closed and ready for the battle; one can actually see fired projectiles with the effect of smoke and dust being raised. On the left of the drawing, the tank is open showing the inner structure that allows it to function. The four wheels on which the tank moves are cogwheels connected to a transmission mechanism formed by four lantern pinions set in motion by crank. These cranks are to be activated manually by eight men placed inside the tank; they can propel and drive it in every direction.
